DON BOSCO CATHOLIC TVET INSTITUTE \u2013 BOSCO CHILDREN<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>[\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][vc_column_text css_animation=”fadeInUp” text_align=”center”]\n

The TVET Program is primarily aimed at drop-outs, street children and youth in urgent need of a job. TVET provides non-formal and informal courses, according to the new policy of the Government (22\/08\/2008). Students can attend both theoretical and practical lessons and they also have extracurricular courses such as Moral Ethics, English, Health and Business courses. They have the possibility of either apprenticeship or cooperative training, according to the Government Policy.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

The TVET strategies use preventive and rehabilitative interventions in order to reintegrate at-risk children into society.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text] <\/p>\n

  • Professional Orientation:<\/u><\/strong> each child gets the opportunity to choose among various jobs according to their personal inclinations and attitudes<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Teaching and Training<\/u><\/strong>: each child will be provided with theoretical teaching and practical training in various fields of choice. Interest, capability and attitude of the child help them grow and reenter into society.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Work experience<\/u><\/strong>: each child gets to gradually obtain work experience. With cooperative training TVET Program also offers help with the initial approach to the workforce (various experiences help gain new perspective and add value to society while successfully integrating youth into Labor Market)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        <\/div><\/div><\/div>[vc_empty_space][vc_column_text]\u2018\u2019Bosco children\u2019\u2019 was established as a part of\u00a0 \u2018\u2019Bosco children preventive and rehabilitation program\u2019\u2019 – a way to support the young who are living in the streets of Addis Ababa and are most at risk.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

        The main goal of the Institute is to provide vocational training in different fields for street children, but it serves destitute families\u2019 children and Eritrean refugees as well.<\/span><\/p>\n

        Different fields of training are divided in departments and held to their own standard with TVET institute departments being Leather and Leather Goods production, Tailoring, Basic metal work, Woodwork, Automotive, Building Electrical Installations and Food preparation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

        This TVET institute offers a unique department known as \u2018\u2019Job Service office\u2019\u2019 that solely works on trainees employability. They facilitate internship placement, help with job opportunities, provide <\/span>soft-skill training <\/b>(life skill training, business skill training), guidance and counseling on how to get a job. To relieve some of the stresses and help with employment opportunities, the beneficiaries are provided with co-operative training.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

        The \u2019Job Service office\u2019\u2019 also does tracer studies and market assessment research.<\/span><\/p>\n

        While the TVET institute provides only short term training as a head start, long term training has shown to be incomplete as most at risk youths are unable to regularly attend secondary education and above.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

        Ethiopian youth take a higher percentage of the total population making them a vital part in the society structure. That\u2019s why the main focus of the Don Bosco TVET Institute for over 10 years thas been working with youth and helping them become competent and skilled members of their society.<\/span><\/p>\n

        All trainees are encouraged to become sustainable by learning entrepreneurship basics, teamwork and other soft-skills such as Kaizen (the 5-s method).<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner]

        <\/span><\/div><\/div>

        Bosco children beneficiaries in 2008\/09 G.C. The beneficiaries are street children from different Ethiopian regional places who live in Addis Ababa city<\/span><\/p>\n

        Department training capacity: 25 trainees per batch and 75 per year.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

        184<\/b> trainees received the eight-month-long training from 2008\/2009 G.C until 2021. G.C.\u00a0 For more productivity the duration of the training was reduced from eight to three months in 2021.\u00a0 resulting in <\/span>21<\/b> trainees attending training in the same year.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

        205<\/b> trainees attended the training so far.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

        The trainees are taught to use hand tools and handle equipment, perform basic cutting, perform basic stitching and minor maintenance, manual pattern making and other important skills such as applying quality standards and successfully working in teams.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>[\/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1\/2″]

        Basic metal work department<\/b> began training for Bosco children beneficiaries in 2008\/2009 and a total of <\/span>157<\/b> Don Bosco beneficiaries had the advantage of the Institute\u2019s training<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

        Department training capacity: <\/span>25<\/b> trainees per batch and <\/span>75<\/b> trainees per year.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

        From 2008\/9 till June 2020\/21 <\/span>140<\/b> trainees attended the eight-month-long training while in 2021 a total of 17 trainees attended the three-month-long training.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

        The trainees are taught to draw, do bench work, weld, manipulate sheet metal, forge, oxyacetylene, etc.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

        Technical and metal work jobs are almost always sought after making this program a sustainable solution to fill the job market.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>[\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner]

        BUILDING ELECTRICAL INSTALLATION<\/span><\/div>[\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1\/2″]

        Building electrical installations <\/b><\/span>Our newly opened department began with training in 2020. G.C. and is already giving great results.<\/span><\/p>\n

        Department training capacity: <\/span>25<\/b> trainees per batch and <\/span>75<\/b> trainees per year. In 2020\/21, <\/span>57<\/b> trainees completed the three-month-long training.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

        With different sets of skills needed an interdisciplinary approach is cultivated giving the trainees a head start in many respective fields.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

        The solar photovoltaic training makes this department valuable in the current world we live in. Renewable energy is becoming the most preferred source of energy and our Institute added this to the curriculum making sure that we teach the young to protect the planet and keep biodiversity.<\/span><\/p>\n

        They are also taught to use hand tools and test instruments, perform measurements and calculations, troubleshoot AC\/DC power supply, terminate and connect electrical wiring and electronics, basics of solar photovoltaic systems, to install and terminate wire systems, etc.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>[\/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1\/2″]

        The <\/span>Automotive<\/b> Department<\/b> began with training in 2013\/14.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

        Department training capacity: 25 trainees per batch and 75 trainees per year\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

        169<\/b> trainees received eight months training from the Automotive department from 2013.\/14. until June 2021. <\/span>21<\/b> trainees completed the three-month-long training in 2021.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

        A total of <\/span>190<\/b> trainees have attended the training so far.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

        Some of the skills taught are applying Automotive Workplace Safety Fundamentals, applying the 3S, using tools, operating equipment and measuring instruments, reading and interpreting Workshop Manuals, applying Automotive Mechanical System Fundamentals, removing tags and replacing vehicle components, automotive Electrical systems, etc.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>[\/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1\/2″]

        The food preparation <\/b>department began its training for Bosco children beneficiaries in 2008\/09 G.C. This is where our future cooks and bakers are made.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

        From 2013\/14 until June 2020 a total of 129 trainees attended the eight-month-long training\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

        55<\/b> of the trainees completed the three-month-long training in 2021. Which brings us to a total of <\/span>184 <\/b>participants who benefited from this program until now.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

        The trainees are taught to keep up with the hygiene procedure, workplace communication, basic method of cookery, preparing soups and vegetables, farinaceous dishes, preparing pastries, meat, They are also taught to prepare basic Ethiopian cultural dishes with regards to building and preserving their cultural identity.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>[\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner]

        FURNITURE MAKING<\/span><\/div>[\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1\/2″]

        The furniture making department <\/b>began with training in 2011.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

        Department training capacity: 25 trainees per batch and 75 trainees per year<\/span><\/p>\n

        148 <\/b>trainees attended the eight-month-long training in this department from 2011 G.C until June, 2020 G.C.\u00a0 <\/span>22<\/b> trainees have attended the three-month-long\u00a0 training in 2021.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

        170<\/b> trainees completed their training making this trade a fairly successful one. Some of the skills that they are taught are how to interpret working drawings, produce handmade timber joints, operate basic woodwork machines, etc.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

        Tailoring department <\/b><\/span>One of the most recent departments in our Institute is the tailoring department. It opened its doors in 2020 for Bosco children beneficiaries and provided <\/span>57<\/b> trainees with the three-month-long training till June 2021 G.C.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

        Future tailors and designers learn embroidery, how to operate and prepare machines, patternmaking, sewing and many things more.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
